Course Title: ART 502 Contemporary Problems in Art Education
Term: Odd Numbered Summers and by DIS as Needed
Course Description
The purpose of the course is to help practicing art educators address current problems in art curriculum and instruction. Emphasis will be on exploring specific areas to better equip the art teacher in meeting the needs of the students in the public school setting. Topics will vary and visiting specialists in art education may conduct an in-depth look at some facet of this field.

Context: MEd Art Education and MAT Art Education candidates who have a broad range of art and educational experiences.

Process: Students will read and reflect on chapters on Contemporary Issues in Art Education. From their readings and discussions, students will prepare curriculum resources reflecting best practices in contemporary art education issues. Students will develop and complete a service learning project.

Content: Students will gain knowledge and skills of contemporary issues in art education and review best practices in art education, through guided discussion, reflections, and presentations. This course will include the development of a service-learning project.

Course Objectives

Demonstrate an understanding of contemporary cultural and social issues through lesson plans, readings, presentations, discussions and writings.

Research and construct a PowerPoint presentation to present to the class that describes the life/work of three contemporary artists who address critical social issues.
Lesson Plan that Addresses Contemporary Art
After researching a contemporary artist who works with critical social issues, construct a lesson plan using state standards to address a critical social issue. Include a PowerPoint presentation to supplement your lesson.
Completion of a Service Learning Project
