Course Title: ART 560 Research in Art Education
Term: Spring Even Years
Course Description
This course examines various quantitative and qualitative methodologies for Art Education. Topics include ethics in research, reading and interpreting research journal articles, action research/Teachers as Researchers, authentic assessment in Art Education, research paradigms and designs, feminist and other critical theory and post-modern concerns.
Context: MEd Art Education and possibly some MAT Art Education candidates who have a broad range of art and educational experiences.
Process: Students will read and reflect on texts on Art Education research. From their readings and discussions, students will learn to interpret and evaluate research, develop research designs, identify and apply contemporary theoretical paradigms and implement action research in the art classroom.
Content: Students will gain knowledge and skills of research design and review best practices in the field, through readings, reflections, and developing presentations and proposals for research. Students will be able to identify contemporary research paradigms and apply them to questions from the field.

Course Objectives

The student will be able to interpret educational research and create critical commentary based on the reported study findings.

The student will be able to design authentic assessments to evaluate research in art education.

The student will be able to apply principles of action research to everyday practice in art education by identifying contemporary paradigms and applying theory to research design while maintaining ethical standards and adding to the body of knowledge in the field.
Course Outcomes

Students will read and critically review research articles and chapter readings representing various methodologies and educational perspectives.

Students will construct a mini-study using standard qualitative research methods – presentation of questions, review of research, selection of a methodology, refinement of questions, and implement the project.

Students will:a. review and select appropriate contemporary theory and methodology to frame their research projects and ensure ethical practice in the field through necessary review and/or oversight and b. will review action research techniques and design a project to be implemented in the art classroom and submit a research article based on their findings to a major art education publication.

Reviews of Research Articles and Chapter Readings
Read and construct a response to the chapter of at least two paragraphs of at least 5 sentences that 1. summarizes and 2. analyzes the key points of the chapter. Note what strikes you as the most critical take-away/s.
Action Research Project
Design a project to be implemented in the art classroom. Follow publication guidelines regarding the construction of the paper.
Qualitative Mini-Study
Construct a mini-study using standard qualitative research methods – presentation of questions, review of research, selection of a methodology, refinement of questions, and implement the project.
