Course Title: ART 517 Fine Arts Administration and Supervision

Course Description 

This course provides an introduction to Fine Arts Education Administration and Supervision and is for advance certification candidates except by permission of the instructor.  Topics include program evaluation, teacher evaluation, reading and interpreting research journal articles, grant writing, and applicable school personnel and school finance principles.  

 

Context: MEd Art Education and possibly some MAT Art Education candidates who have a broad range of art and educational experiences.

 

Process: Students will read and reflect on texts on Arts Administration research.  From their readings and discussions, students will learn to evaluate fine arts programs and teachers through various assessment instruments, and develop effective grant proposals.    

 

Content:  Students will gain knowledge and skills of fine arts administration and review best practices in the field, through guided discussion, reflections, and presentations. This course will include the development of a draft grant proposal.

Course Objectives 

  1. The student will be able to read and interpret educational arts administration research and create critical commentary based on the reported study findings.

  2. The student will be able to review and implement assessments to evaluate programs and teachers in art education.

  3. The student will develop an arts grants proposal including a comprehensive needs assessment, goals and objectives, program design, timeline, evaluation, and comprehensive budget narrative.

Course Outcomes

  1. Construct responses to chapters in text representing arts administration educational perspectives. (Written critiques)

  2. Construct a report/presentation on a full-program assessment for arts education in a school and determine how program assessment assists in strategic planning and is connected to teacher evaluation.

  3. Use program evaluations and strategic planning drafts to develop an arts grant with detailed needs assessment, goals and objectives, program design, timeline, evaluation, and budget narrative.

Chapter Responses

Read the chapter and write at least two paragraphs that describe a summary of the chapter and how you interpret the information for your life, teaching, and classroom. 

 

 

Program Assessment

Using Opportunity to Learn Standards, complete a thorough program evaluation of your school. You will use parts of this for your grant design after midterm. 

 

 

Grant Design

Using the Program Assessment that you developed before midterm, the rubric from your syllabus, and samples, construct a grant proposal based upon need and follow up with a presentation that you can share with PTO, grantors, or administrators to gain support for your project.
